Wedding Gown Preservation After the Wedding

Have your gown professionally cleaned within a few weeks of the wedding. Stains from sweat, body oils, and spills may not be visible immediately, but they oxidize over time and turn yellow. The longer they sit, the harder they are to remove.

Look for a cleaner who specializes in wedding gowns, not a standard dry cleaner. Wedding dresses use delicate fabrics, beadwork, and lace that require specific cleaning techniques.

Professional preservation is different from cleaning. After cleaning, the gown is treated to prevent yellowing, wrapped in acid-free tissue, and placed in an acid-free box. This is the best way to protect your gown long-term.

Preservation services typically cost $200 to $400 depending on the gown. It is an investment in keeping your dress as beautiful as the day you wore it.

Store your preserved gown in a cool, dry place. Avoid attics (extreme heat), basements (humidity), and direct sunlight. A closet in a climate-controlled room is ideal.

Do not hang your gown on a hanger long-term. The weight of the skirt can stretch the bodice and distort the shape over time. If your gown is in a preservation box, keep it flat.

Open the preservation box once a year to inspect the gown. Look for any signs of yellowing, mildew, or pest damage. If you see anything concerning, contact your preservation service immediately.

When you open the box, do not remove the gown from the acid-free tissue. Simply unfold the tissue layers, look, and refold. Handling the gown with bare hands can transfer oils.
