Just Engaged Over the Holidays? What to Do First

The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year are the most popular time of year to get engaged. If that is you, congratulations. Once the excitement settles, the questions start coming. Here is a calm, step-by-step guide to what to do first, and what can wait.

Take a Moment to Enjoy It

Before you open a single planning spreadsheet, give yourself a week or two simply to be engaged. Share the news, celebrate with family over the holidays, and enjoy the ring. The planning will still be there in January.

Agree on the Big Three

Three decisions shape everything else: your approximate date or season, your rough guest count, and your overall budget. You do not need exact answers, but a general sense of each makes every later choice easier.

A season is often enough to start. Knowing you want a fall 2027 wedding, for example, tells you when to book a venue, when to shop for your dress, and how much time you have to plan.

Book Your Venue Early

Popular venues often book 12 to 18 months out, especially for Saturdays in spring and fall. Your venue sets your date, and your date sets almost every other timeline, so it is usually the first thing couples lock in.

Your venue also influences your dress. A grand ballroom, a rustic barn, and an outdoor garden each suit different silhouettes and fabrics, so it helps to know your setting before you shop.

When to Start Dress Shopping

We recommend shopping 12 to 14 months before the wedding. Most gowns take several months to arrive after ordering, then you will want time for alterations. Starting in that window gives you every option and no rush fees.

Appointment times fill quickly in January and February because so many brides got engaged over the holidays. If you know your season, booking your bridal appointment early helps you get the day and time you want.

What Can Wait

Flowers, cake, favors, and the final details can all wait until later in the process. It is easy to feel like everything needs to be decided at once, but most of it does not. Focus on the venue, the date, the budget, and the dress, and the rest will fall into place.
